I am not sure if I would have written this book to begin with had I found potential readers actually reading Marie L. Burke's six volume 'Swami Vivekananda in the West : New Discoveries'. The present volume intends to be even more objective compared to Burke's work. I have not hesitated to criticize her ideas and occasionally, SV himself. Hence this work aspires to be of greater critical, scholarly and historical merit, I hope. The six chapters of this book are not only brief versions of Burke's six volumes, but also constitute a reinterpretation of the facts that she has presented. This reinterpretation is necessary as, though I believe she has presented her facts faithfully, she can often be caught exaggerating the influence of SV on the West. To avoid excessive references to her work at chapter-ends, I refer to them within square brackets [volume, page(s)] in the main text. In the present 3rd edition, some photographs of the most important supporters of SV's western mission, some of the World's Fair and Parliament of Religions, as well as some newspaper cartoons, are added. In view of the internet, the long facsimiles from Barrows' volumes have been dropped. In lieu of the appendix materials dropped, this edn includes some other evidences of my research that arose in the form of controversies from earlier edns in the new appendix, particularly if they related to SV's years in the West.
